Jonathans'

I exhaled slowly… settled on the floor. Of the infinitesimal grains of sand on the beach… some, the breeze had blown into this water. They wondered what I was doing there. The alkaline slipperiness of the putrid pool whispered to me and the erratic flight of some proud eagle above struck a note that was a little too true. So I drowned, for a while. Hid, in the water. Flat mate of mine decided to join me, as if to undermine my struggle, as if to say ‘anything you can do I can do better’ in an unspoken perpetual competition that every professional enters… I wasn’t competing… I wasn’t competing at all.

“We degenerate into hideous puppets, haunted by the memory of passions by which we were too much afraid, and the exquisite temptations that we dare not yield to.”
And she asked him if this was so?
Many years later, he did reply…

Of course your praises should be sung by loftier harps than mine,
Still I dare to force the question, force the absence of your sign.
I’ve seen stars and constellations in the glisten of your eyes.
I’ve seen suits of ill proportions, I’ve seen cotton shirts and ties.

This trade of one resentment will last forever and a day,
And not a thing in god’s blue oceans and not a word that I can say.

Miss Cora Munro, Miss Madeline Stowe, I see sandstorms in your hair,
Ones that consume without fair warning, should one be standing fairly near.
And so consumed with my reluctance, give me an second to recant
But this boy has a tendency to ramble, to bullshit and to rant.

My indecisions, my revisions are cast in stone and drift away
I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again, does it matter what I say?
But still I’ll say it, lest this gnawing takes me a decade before my time
You see, the sages of the ages told me to burn if I’m to shine…

I’d do it all for Suzannah, I’d do it for the silver in her manor…

“O Lord! Forgive us our sins! Lead us not into temptation and wash away our inequities.”

I long to rest my weary head,
To tread the sod that I once tread,
To make amends that lift my soul,
To dodge a few and score a goal.

I too have seen my greatness flicker, It’s just that we recover quicker.
And if we lack that strong resolve, fuck ‘em behn chod, we’ll evolve.
I knew; maybe one of just a few
But we conceal it so well by what we wear
Conceal it so well by what we do,
Conceal it so well, just me and you.

I’ve seen that stride, that heart of gold,
seen the world your shoulders hold
I’ve seen you laugh, those honest eyes,
seen them get away with lies,
Seen you fall and hurt your pride…
then rise again and brush your side.
So be strong, let the chips fall where they may…
and brother Jay, I’ll never sway.
